DUAL reasons to compete in island event
You don’t have to be a professional athlete to appreciate the chance to take your bike to Motutapu and Rangitoto.
There’s only one chance a year to mountainbike them and it’s coming up on March 22.
The Partners Life DUAL is a trail run, walk, mountainbike and off-road triathlon on the Hauraki Gulf islands.
There are seven event options to cater for all ages, abilities and fitness levels.
The event, now in its sixth year, supports the work of the Motutapu Restoration Trust, raising funds for conservation efforts on the island.
It’s the only multisport event in the world that takes place on a pest-free island sanctuary.
All courses take you over trails and farm land with spectacular views of Auckland city and the Hauraki Gulf.
For mountain bikers there are two options: 30km or 45km.
The event caters for groups of friends and families with shorter distance walk/run events.
You can also book the onsite childcare set up on the island for the event.
Once you’ve finished your event there is a concert at Home Bay to enjoy through the rest of the day and evening, which is free for all participants.
There is food and cold beverages available to buy.
When you’re ready to head home there are ferries from Home Bay to Auckland city via Devonport.
Stacey Colyer took part for the first time last year and says: ‘‘Thanks for a top-notch day out. The DUAL was my first full multisport event and it was spectacular.
‘‘I’ve truly caught the bug! See you next year!’’
