Stu­dents show­case their trades skills

Trades stu­dents are pre­par­ing to show off their skills to the com­mu­nity at Fu­ture Skills’ Trades Train­ing Open Day on June 26.

Fu­ture Skills is an NZQA ac­cred­ited pri­vate train­ing es­tab­lish­ment and of­fers free Level 2, trades cour­ses in car­pen­try, en­gi­neer­ing and elec­tri­cal en­gi­neer­ing.

Fu­ture Skills trades pro­gramme man­ager Peter Mans­field says the free open day is a chance for trades stu­dents to show off the skills they have learnt.

‘‘We are very proud of our stu­dents, most of them have lit­er­ally started with no for­mal qual­i­fi­ca­tions and no trades ex­pe­ri­ence what­so­ever, some have never seen the in­side of a trades work­shop be­fore,’’ Peter says.

‘‘Watch­ing stu­dents trans­form while they train with us is sim­ply amaz­ing and this open day is just one way our stu­dents thought of to share their joy of learn­ing with oth­ers who may be look­ing at en­ter­ing the trades in­dus­try,’’ he says.

The Fu­ture Skills Trades Train­ing Open Day will fea­ture elec­tri­cal dis­plays and demon­stra­tions us­ing en­gi­neer­ing tools, weld­ing equip­ment and lathes, as well as car­pen­try and build­ing in ac­tion.

The af­ter­noon also fea­tures a free sausage siz­zle. En­try to the event is free.

Stu­dents wish­ing to enrol on the day should bring their birth cer­tifi­cate or pass­port and proof of their ad­dress.

When: 12.30pm – 6.30pm, June 26, 2014.
