Central Leader

Through to Chatham Cup quarters

- By JEREMY RUANE

Central United and Onehunga Sports have advanced to the quarterfinals of the ASB Chatham Cup.

Central came from behind to down the table-topping Glenfield Rovers 3-1 at Kiwitea St on Saturday.

Trailing after five minutes, Central, fielding five New Zealand under-20 candidates and just two ASB Premiership players, got back on level terms through Emiliano Tade just before halftime.

But they were reduced to 10 men on the hour following the dismissal of Adam Mitchell.

That didn’t stop Central earning a penalty soon after, but Tade’s effort was saved by Tamati Williams.

Glenfield then had a goal disallowed, but as they pressed for a winner, they got stung twice in the dying minutes, firstly by Tade’s deflected effort, then by James Hoyt’s stoppage time strike as Rovers chased an equaliser.

Second half goals from Josh Ming and Sean Lovemore fired Onehunga to a 2-0 win at Tauranga City United on Sunday.

Bay Olympic will look to join their Central Auckland rivals in the cup quarter-finals this Saturday, when they take on Hamilton Wanderers in a delayed fifth round tie at Olympic Park from 2pm.

In this Saturday’s Lotto Northern Premier League action, Three Kings United take on reigning champions East Coast Bays at Keith Hay Park, while Onehunga head to Fred Taylor Park in West Auckland.

In Lotto northern premier women’s games on Sunday both Three Kings United and Western Springs were beaten.

United lost goalkeeper Rebecca Rolls to concussion as they lost 3-0 at Glenfield Rovers, while Springs were humbled 8-0 by reigning champions Eastern Suburbs.

This Sunday Three Kings visit Claudelands Rovers, while Lynn-Avon United travel to Madills Farm to take on Suburbs.

Springs will entertain Bay of Plenty in a battle between the bottom two at Seddon Fields.

In Lotto Northern League First Division both Metro and Mt Albert-Ponsonby suffered 1-0 defeats at the hands of league leaders Eastern Suburbs and Hibiscus Coast respectively, while Western Springs moved back into a share of second spot after Rossi Nkoy and Jono Quinn scored in a 2-1 win at Takapuna.

Metro and MAP meet in the New North Rd derby on Friday night while Springs take on Ellerslie, their fellow second-placed rivals, at Seddon Fields from 5pm on Saturday.

Goals from Ben Shaw and Scott Cameron earned OnehungaMangere United a 2-2 draw at Oratia United in Lotto northern league second division on Saturday.

Imran Ali was on target as Lynn-Avon United were unlucky to go down 2-1 at home to Papakura City.
