Acro yoga takes flight in New Zealand
You might not have heard of acro yoga yet, but it won’t be long until it takes off in New Zealand, especially if Nicole Moyes – the owner/operator of Raw Yoga in Milford has her way!
The opening of this fantastic new yoga studio in Kitchener Rd was the realisation of a long held dream for Nicole, who first began practicing yoga in her early 20s and began to notice the ‘‘transformative magic’’ it had.
In 2012 she spent a year training as a yoga teacher at the New Zealand School of Yoga and it was soon after that she fell in love with acro yoga – which combines yoga postures, acrobatics and the healing art of thai massage.
Nicole completed her acro yoga teacher training this year in San Diego and she along with Carolyn Russell, who runs Raw Yoga’s mindfulness meditation workshops, are the only two teachers in New Zealand to have been trained by the cofounders of acro yoga.
With the opening of her studio six weeks ago, Nicole and the Raw Yoga team are excited to be able to introduce others to the magic that is acro yoga.
While it may look a little daunting, Nicole says it’s suitable for everyone – from complete novices who have never set foot in a studio before, to someone with 20 years of yoga practice under their belt.
During a class you’ll learn all the necessary building blocks to literally take whatever physical skills you have to new heights and don’t worry if you don’t have a partner to bring with you – you’ll find someone to ‘fly’ with when you arrive.
‘‘Many people see acro yoga and think that they could never do it, but it’s when you challenge yourself and push yourself out of your comfort zone that the biggest transformations can happen.’’
