Auckland mums Big Latch On

- CATRIN OWEN

Auckland mothers can latch on in comfort this Friday.

The Big Latch On will be held on August 5 and 6 for World Breastfeeding Week and to encourage mothers to celebrate breastfeeding.

Jacqui Arnold, project manager with Plunket, has organised an event for mothers living in the city.

‘‘While we were doing the CBD project we really discovered parents were nervous leaving their homes especially with newborns,’’ she says.

‘‘They needed a place to change and feed their babies and were not able to find anywhere.’’

Since the Downtown Shopping Centre shut its doors in May, there are even fewer options for mothers to take their babies, Arnold says.

There is a breastfeeding room at Smith and Caughey’s but Arnold says some women don’t know about it.

‘‘The city is not working for parents with new babies and we have to make a change,’’ Arnold says.

The Big Latch On started in New Zealand 11 years ago and now has about 30 countries involved as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

Mothers are welcome to breastfeed and morning tea will be provided, 10.30am till 11.30am, Blue Bar in the Aotea Centre.

Visit meetup.com for more information about the event.
