St Paul’s retain league title
St Paul’s College successfully defended their SAS College Rugby League title, defeating Wesley College 23-10 at Mt Smart Stadium on August 10.
The Junior Fiu coached side went into the game as favourites but knew season debutants Wesley would not be easy opponents.
‘‘It wasn’t an easy win because we actually had to work for it,’’ Fiu says.
‘‘Every time Wesley had the ball, we had to really defend hard. They are one of those teams that if you give them a chance, they will come back.’’
Fiu commended several key players in the team, Dylan Tevita and cousins Anthony and Jaelin Murray, but especially Sione Gahu for the hard work they put in for the win.
‘‘Wesley was good, they came to play and they were also very determined.
‘‘There was a couple of times they busted our lines and the boys had to really work hard to try and slow them down.
The side heads straight into preparations for the 2016 NZRL National Secondary Schools Tournament.
‘‘I am really relieved, the boys obviously saved their best for last.
‘‘They played really well as a team and stuck to the plan - I am really proud of the way they represented the school and the performance they put out there.
‘‘We have to focus on nationals coming up, it’s a bigger task.’’
