Madison Eve performs as Peach Milk

- HUGH COLLINS

For Madison Eve, synthesizers were a part of childhood. The 21-year-old now produces and performs electronic music under the moniker Peach Milk. The Freemans Bay resident has just released her debut EP and performed at The Others Way Festival 2016 last Friday. Following from its inaugural sold out event last year, the event saw 30 artists perform across 10 K Rd venues. Eve says electronic music was something she was exposed to at an early age through her father having a keen interest in bands such as New Order and Kraftwerk. ‘‘Something about electronic music connected with me, also my Dad is a total synth nerd, so we used to have lots of random keyboards and stuff lying around the house. ‘‘So I guess I just started playing on those when I was really little.’’ At about 15 Eve was introduced to recording software and discovered the world of making music on a computer. ‘‘It’s fascinating to me really, I Finally became super obsessed and was always experimenting and making quite a different variety of music as well, not necessarily the sort of things I’m making now.’’ She says Peach Milk has a strong feel of simple melodies and chord structures, a sound people often describe as ‘‘dreamy’’. ‘‘It’s simple in that regard but then it’s also complex in the way of sound design because I layer so many different synth sounds and ambient weird textures. ‘‘I like using instruments in a different context or sounds that would maybe not be usually used for the sort of music I’m making and using them in a different way ..I feel I take a lot of elements from so many different genres and areas of music and kind of mash them all up together.’’ While there’s a privilege that comes with being an anomaly female producer, it doesn’t mean Eve’s always looked at the same as her male counterparts. ‘‘I do find sometimes I can be tokenised for being a woman and having people being like, ‘ oh you’re really good, for a girl’. ‘‘I have had a few incidences of just kind of being patronised because I have a technical setup.’’
