Central Leader

Recycling centre on show

Aucklanders will get their first glimpse of a new central Auckland recycling centre this weekend.

The Western Springs recycling centre will allow residents and businesses to drop off unwanted items such as furniture, sports equipment, clothes and DIY materials.

It will be built where two community halls currently sit on 956-990 Great North Rd beside the Northwestern Motorway and opposite Western Springs park.

Its location came as a surprise to community groups using the site, when it was announced in December last year.

Auckland Horticultural Council president Olwyn BertramEllison said at the time that they were shocked to find out they may have to leave their clubrooms.

However Auckland Council has now confirmed the Horticultural Council will remain on site.

One of the two community halls will remain while the other hall will be converted to an administration building.

Albert-Eden Local Board chairman Peter Haynes says the centre will have a strong education focus, second-hand store, cafe and facilities to repair and recycle goods.

‘‘It’s not a rubbish or waste management facility,’’ Haynes says.

A community open day will be held at the Great North Rd site on Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
