Julie Anne Genter holds her own in by-election
The Mt Albert by-election is drawing to a close and while Labour MP Jacinda Ardern’s popularity is high, Green MP Julie Anne Genter is not stepping aside.
The by-election has given Labour and the Green Party an opportunity to work together, showing how the two parties will work together in the upcoming general election.
Genter said because National weren’t standing a candidate in the by-election, the opportunity arose for the Greens to put forward a candidate.
‘‘This by-election is the first opportunity for voters in Mt Albert to see what the Green Party and Labour have to offer in a new, progressive government,’’ Genter said.
‘‘It meant we could both campaign and try to get the best result for both our parties without any fear of splitting the vote.
‘‘Either way you get a Green or Labour MP who is committed to changing government so more public transport and more affordable housing.’’
Genter said if elected she would prioritise extensions to Auckland’s rail network and busways, including light rail along Dominion Rd to the airport and to the North Shore.
