$125 rent for a patched-up caravan

- CATRIN OWEN

A run-down-looking caravan with windows held together by brown sticky tape is being advertised for rent as a ‘‘fully-furnished onebedroom unit’’ in New Windsor.

For a weekly rent of $125 a tenant would get to live in the caravan, which sits on a property on Bollard Ave.

The ‘‘unit’’ had been listed by Lincoln Wu as a Mt Albert rental, fully furnished ‘‘1 bedroom unit with 1 bathroom’’ with whiteware included.

The rent included water, power and internet. No pets or smokers were allowed.

The photos attached to the advertisement showed a halfpainted caravan, windows taped up with brown sticky tape and grass growing through the wheel.

The small inside space included a microwave, bed and desk but a bathroom was not visible.

Wu said the standalone caravan was on a property where his parents lived and the caravan’s tenant would have to go inside the main house to use for access to a bathroom.

Wu had been renting out the caravan for the last 20 years but couldn’t recall how many tenants had been through.

But Mt Albert MP Jacinda Ardern said the listing took advantage of people’s desperation.

‘‘No one should prey on people’s vulnerability in a crisis,’’ she said.
