The misunderstood vein disease and the symptoms you can’t ignore

-

It’s a common belief that varicose veins – those purple, lumpy veins often seen on the legs – are just an unsightly issue that older people endure.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Whilst it’s often seen in the more mature population, there are many more people susceptible to this oftenmisunderstood condition at any age from teenagers up.

Those who are in standing occupations, people post-pregnancy and those with a family history of venous disease increases the risk of developing varicose veins.

Some symptoms to look out for are restless legs at nights, cramping of the calves or feet, itchiness associated with dry skin, swelling of the ankles, changes in skin quality and eczema or ulceration in the lower legs and ankles.

Bulging varicose veins also have an increased risk of blood clots.

Varicose veins can appear beneath the skin as bluish-green lines and can be visibly raised, twisted or bulging.

But sometimes they may not be seen or bulging, yet can still cause significant symptoms.

It’s also widely and incorrectly thought that varicose veins are purely a cosmetic problem.

Again, not true. When the veins are stretched, they can become leaky.

The fluid which leaks into the surrounding tissue causes discomfort, swelling and irritation of the skin.

For some, if left untreated, they can result in skin damage, poor healing and ulcers.

Did you know that your local Skin Institute clinic provides the latest in varicose vein treatments?

A GP referral is not necessary and the best part – the treatment no longer involves surgical stripping.

The modern non-surgical procedures are done under local anaesthetic, are well proven and have excellent outcomes, without the risk of a general anaesthetic, the Skin Institute says.

If you’ve been experiencing itchy, cramping or aching legs, or any of the above symptoms, it could be your veins.

Go and see the Skin Institute and one of the highly experiencd team can conduct an initial consultation, which includes an ultrasound map of your veins to determine if treatment is required and the best procedure for your condition.

You may even be covered by your health insurance; check with your provider to be sure.
