Young artist’s work on programme

-

Tikokino School Year 5 pupil Paige McEwan says she is pretty excited at the prospect of seeing a piece of her art on the front of the official programme for this year’s Ross Shield rugby tournament.

Now in its 116th year and older than the Ranfurly Shield, the Ross Shield is regarded as the pinnacle of primary school rugby in the region and has unearthed a host of talent, including Bay born-and-raised All Blacks Josh Kronfeld and Israel Dagg.

Contested by Hawke’s Bay Primary Schools Rugby’s six districts, CHB hosts this year’s tournament in early October. To celebrate, all CHB primary school pupils were invited to enter an art competition to design the front cover of the programme.

Paige’s colourful artwork, which depicts a rugby ball and a set of goal posts at Tikokino Rugby Club’s ground with the Ruahine Ranges in the background, was last week selected as the best entry and will now grace the front cover of 500 copies.

Competition organiser and tournament committee secretary Penny Baines said Paige’s entry piece best fit the competition brief, and was judged the best by an independent graphic designer because of its depth and contrast of colours.

For her winning entry, Paige, 10, won a $50 voucher for herself and a $50 voucher for her school from Paper Plus Waipukurau.

This year’s Ross Shield will be hosted at Central Park in Waipukurau from October 2-6.
