350 people at half marathon

-

Waipukurau Racecourse sprang to life on Sunday with just under 350 participants taking part in the 2018 Hatuma Lime Half Marathon, one of the events in this year’s Spring Fling.

Though the only records broken were the number of smiles on people’s faces, Sport Hawke’s Bay’s CHB community sport adviser Nicki Heremaia said organisers were thrilled with entry numbers and the support from the community.

“From a foggy start into spring brilliance, we could not have asked for a better day,” she said.

In total, 346 runners and walkers people took part in the either the 21.1km half marathon or the 10km short courses, slightly down last year’s record field of 401 competitors.

The most notable performance came from Hastings triathlete Karen Toulmin who won the women’s 21.1km halfmarathon for the fourth year in a row.

Heremaia said the introduction of electronic timing made a huge difference in providing instantaneous and accurate results, making for a much improved experience for participants and organisers alike.

Winner of the major spot prize of a family prize package of a night’s accommodation at Kennedy Park Resort and a family pass to the Magpies versus North Harbour rugby game on September 22 was won by Waiora Rogers from Hastings.
