Join the Youth Parliament
Kieran McAnulty, Labour List MP in Wairarapa, is seeking applications from interested students from the Wairarapa Electorate (Wairarapa, Tararua District and Central Hawke’s Bay) for Youth Parliament 2019.
In the next Youth Parliament Youth MPs will participate in a programme from 1 March to 31 August, including attending a two-day Youth Parliament event in Wellington on 16 and 17 July.
“This programme gives young people the opportunity to understand and be a part of the Parliamentary process and connect with their communities. It is a significant opportunity for a local student to join 119 other young New Zealanders to gather the views of their peers and bring young peoples’ voices to Parliament. My primary purpose in Parliament is to be a voice for the Central Hawke’s Bay so I’m really looking for someone who shares my passion for the region.”
Mr McAnulty invites interested students to write expressing their interest and including an essay of approximately 500 words outlining a political or social issue they consider as being highly important within their community, whether that be their school, a group to which they belong, their town or their electorate, and discussing potential changes or initiatives which could be undertaken to positively advance the issue.
The essays can be sent to his office by email at kieran.mcanulty@parliament.govt.nz by Friday 5 October. Mr McAnulty’s decision will be advised by Friday 19 October. He’s looking for a young person who is:
■ aged 16 to 18 on 19 October 2018;
■ active in their community;
■ able to attend Youth Parliament on 16 and 17 July and committed to the Youth MP tenure of 1 March to 31 August 2019. Training will be offered at the beginning of this tenure;
■ passionate about youth issues, politics and / or social change;
■ able to seek the views, opinions and ideas of their peers and represent them at the two-day Youth Parliament 2019 event;
■ prepared to work within the protocols and behavioural expectations of Youth Parliament 2019.
