Show taste test for the children
It’s not all child’s play at the CHBA&PShow. Justsomeof it.
Andinparticular, the children’s categories in the Exhibition Hall competitions.
Tuckedawayfrom the noise of the sideshows and the bustle of the trade stalls you will find the exhibition hall with its lineup of roses, Christmas cakes and handcrafts.
It’s a chance for the children to get involved, with baking, floral and handcraft sections with entries on the day.
The children’s baking section category this year is “Mousetraps”, and these can be as simple or as fancy as you wantthemto be.
Recipe:
Lightly grill both sides of four pieces of bread under a grill.
Butter and spread marmite or vegemite on one side of the bread.
Addgrated cheese on top of the covered side.
Youcan fillthem with whatever fillings you like.
Cook until the cheese melts and the bread is crunchy.
Platethem up, fill out an entry form available from the
showoffice or on thewebsite www.chbshow.co.nz, and have your mousetraps at the exhibitionhall by9amon Saturday, November14.
For children morefloral than foody— this year’s floral category is a “floral aqua jar”.
Materials:
Aglass jar with a lid Blu-Tac or plasticine Atoothpick flowers and leaves including at least one rose.
Water
Instructions:
Stick the plasticine or Blu-Tac to the inside of the lid and use the toothpick to poke holes in it for the flower stems.
Arrange the flowers, using theholes.
Fill the jar with water. Place the flowers into the jar and screw the lid on tight. Tip the jar upsidedown. You’ve done it!
Use your imagination to add other decorations— maybeaddsomefood colouring to the water . . . or glitter!
For the craftiest children, the children’s novelty section could be theway to go. This year’s category is “create a Christmas angel” and there is no limit to thematerials or amountof imagination that can be used.
Have funwith it, enteron the day, and if you don’t take awaya prize, there’s always candyfloss for consolation!
