Great Dusties

-

Your Classic Driver Issue 53 Feb/ Mar 2014 has some great ‘Dusties’ photos courtesy of Bruce Jenks from Invercargill.

I have some comments to add to the captions on the photos.

Page 108 First photo of car #44 – while this car in the photo has a Kangaroo on the side of it, it is not an Aston Martin. I think it is the HWM that belonged to the Avery brothers, in which case the photo was taken at Ryal Bush on 16 Feb 1957. Second photo of car #1 – photo taken on 11 Feb 1956. The car is an Aston Martin DB3R, not DB34

Page 109 Second photo down of car 3 – photo taken on 11 Feb 1956, not 1956-57

Page 110 First photo – the second car (#18) is Ross Jensen’s Maserati 250F Chassis 2508 (not Pat Hoare’s Ferrari). Note that this was not the 40 lap ‘Teretonga International’ main race; in the main race, Ross Jensen was first (from McLaren and Brabham). Scott-Brown was 6th. Photo taken on 8 Feb 1958. Second photo – this was the Teretonga Opening meeting held on 30 Nov 1957 where 12 cars faced the starter for the main race, the ‘Teretonga Park Championship’. Merv Neil (Auckland) (see photo – car #47 Cooper T39 ‘Bobtail’) finished first followed ½ mile behind by #17 Ernie Sprague (Timaru) in his Maserati 4CLT-48. In third place, and 2 laps down, was #3 Ron Rutherford (Christchurch) in his Lycoming Special (not the Ralph Watson car). Ian McKellar (Ashburton), also 2 laps down, – #36 Cooper Bobtail in the photo – was 4th ahead of ‘Doc’ Langley (Winton) in his Austin Healey (#22 on right in photo) who was 4 laps down in 5th place. In 6th place was #10 Peter Pinkney (Waikaia) Jaguar XK 120 Drop-head coupe (on left of photo). In 7th was Bill Gerard (Winton) in Ray Mitchell’s little #26 JBS 500cc (see photo in centre of page 111) and 8th was #18 Bruce Wood (Staride 500cc). After a number of visits to the Pits, #11 Allen Freeman in the Lago Talbot (see photo) finished in 9th place. Ron Frost (Levin) in car # 15 (on right in photo) retired after 10 laps. Wally Henwood (Christchurch) in his #16 Cooper Vincent (see in photo with hands raised) and #14 C.H Sharp (Invercargill) Cooper 500cc also retired.
