I was asked by
Nick Gethin to contribute to a film which Sky TV is making as a tribute to his father, Peter Gethin, who will be remembered for his success in the Tasman Series, which he won in 1974 driving one of the VDS team Chevron B24s.
Nick invited several of us to an excellent lunch, which he personally prepared, and then to ‘sing for our supper’ (or lunch) we did interviews on our remembrances of Peter. Damon Hill, Mike Knight, Robs Lamplough and I were the group for the day, but others, especially Peter’s wife Robbie have already contributed.
Probably Peter’s most famous victory was the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, when he caught the leading bunch with a lap to go and snatched the win. I watched it from fairly close quarters (.61 of second behind in fifth place in the sister BRM to the winner). Sky is getting the winning car and taking it to Monza for Nick to drive, a nice touch.
The film will be aired around Italian GP time later this year. Hopefully it will show in New Zealand.
