LOVE A ROAD-TRIP PIE?

-

Love a good pie? NZ chefs give us tips on where to find their go-to downand-dirty pies for a road trip…

MARTIN BOSLEY (YELLOW BRICK ROAD) I kid you not, but the best pie in all the land is the beef bourguignon from Café Mirabelle in Carterton. It’s got a quartered onion in the centre of it, so there is a mound in the pastry top. It's run by a French couple – he’s out front and she’s in the kitchen and a real talent. Her garbure (traditional French stew) will send you into a food coma. Buy a pie and he hand writes the reheating instructions in French on the paper bag. 31 High Street North, Carterton

JESSICA MURPHY (KAI, GALWAY) Oh, best pie is defo Gear Meat Pie Company in Gisborne, with Far East coffee. Bliss!

I like the addition of cheese, so mince and cheese would be the go. It’s classy yet grounded. 85 Grey Street, CBD, Gisborne

CASEY MCDONALD (CRAGGY RANGE)

The Clareville Bakery near Carterton. Any of the pies, but the mince and cheese is insane. theclarevillebakery.co.nz

VAUGHAN MABEE (AMISFIELD BISTRO) Fergbaker in Queenstown – the beef and blue cheese is amazing and my go-to champagne-hangover pie. 42 Shotover St, Queenstown

LUCAS PARKINSON (ODE, WANAKA)

Fergbaker in Queenstown for the lamb and kūmara, Jimmy’s Pies in Roxborough, Otago for the steak

& cheese. jimmyspies.co.nz

PETER GORDON The Baker Man Café in Awanui – lamb & kūmara. 8 State Highway 10, Awanui

ABHISHEK SHARMA (HARBOUR SOCIETY, SO/ AUCKLAND) The Pie Shop, Kumeu for the Bella – lemon, parmesan and chicken. thepieshop.co.nz

JOSHY B (JOBRO’S BURGERS) Anderson’s in Hawera do a pretty bloody good steak and cheese. Or if I’m out on the motorbike I’ll treat myself to a steak and cheese at a Wild Bean Cafe (BP) but I don’t always admit that to people. andersonspies.co.nz

BRADLEY HORNBY (ARBOUR) When I used to eat pies The Burleigh in Blenheim was my fave. All their pies are great but the pork belly is truly epic. 34 New Renwick Road, Burleigh, Blenheim

EDITOR'S NOTE. And if all else fails, you can’t beat a good party pie...
