Call for fresh helpers as society membership hits hew heights

The Maintenance Engineering Society (MESNZ) continues to enjoy the validation of maintenance engineers throughout the country with membership numbers creeping towards 500. The record number of members comes on the back of the society committing to getting in touch with engineers throughout the country with its SKF Network Evening series. The response has been a surge in involvement as engineers realise that the society is there to help and connect them.

While this is fantastic news for the society in terms of validating it’s representation in many forums, the increased membership brings new challenges for the society to deal with.

At a core level, the society is always looking for new members to join the society management, either as committee members, or in the many associate roles available. Right now, assistance is required in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Christchurch for running the Network Evening series. These areas have experienced MESNZ members managing the local events, but additional support is always required. In other areas such as Nelson, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill, interest exists but MESNZ has no current members to assign to the event management.

At industry level, MESNZ has representation in several forums, for example education, apprenticeships, health and safety and codes. Assistance and support in these areas is always appreciated particularly as the voluntary input can be quite draining for individuals. It is however immensely satisfying to see the input of MESNZ absorbed into positive change for the country. Members expressing an interest in these, or other pertinent forums will be well received.

At committee level, MESNZ has a strategic intent to keep its team young and fresh balanced with the sage experience of age. To this end, several long term members have stepped back from the main roles and into associate roles instead. This opens up opportunities for new members to become part of the core team. This year, key roles such as Chairman and Secretary are being vacated.

The committee meets monthly by phone/skype with at least three face to face meetings planned throughout the year. All MESNZ participation is voluntary, although associated disbursements are covered.

Members do not have to be on the committee to get involved in MESNZ activities, hence the associate roles available in the SKF Network Evening Series, MESNZ representation, webinars, the SKF NMEC conference, the Maintenance Torque magazine to name a few.

So the call has gone out to those with something to say, a passion for things engineering, or just an interest in extending themselves to put their hands up. Age or experience are not prerequisites, but passion and commitment is. Contact details for the society are available on the society website,
