DC motor specialist sponsors lecture series featuring leading surgical robotics expert Dr Catherine Mohr

Maxon motor Australia and the Institute of Professional Engineers NZ (IPENZ) are teaming up to deliver a series of lectures with guest speaker Dr Catherine Mohr.

Dr Catherine Mohr is Vice President of Strategy at Intuitive Surgical, the US company responsible for the da Vinci Surgical System. The da Vinci is a ground-breaking surgical robot that assists surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures and the world’s first robotic surgical system with 3D HD vision. Maxon motors are in the da Vinci Surgical System.

Medical applications place extreme demands on DC motor components: they must be precise, sterilisable, run smoothly and emit very low heat build-up from the DC motors themselves. maxon motor have a spe-cialised department, maxon medical, that works with customers on the development and production of micro-motors for these specialist applications. Strictly in accordance with the medical standard ISO 13485, existing DC motor technology exists in not only the surgical robot but also insulin pumps, precision hand-held tools, prostheses, and many others.

The Pickering Lecture series is free and held from May 16 – 19 in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Dr Mohr will talk about how advances in technology can save lives.

Dr Mohr is at the forefront of medical technology, robotics, engineering and product design with a background incorporating all these disciplines and more. Dr Mohr evaluates new technologies to assimilate next generation of computer aided surgical devices. With more than a dozen patents to her name, Dr Mohr serves on the faculty of Singularity University, an institution teaching and studying the impact of exponentially changing technologies and regularly lectures at Stanford University School of Medicine.
