HOW DOES DRY ICE BLASTING WORK?
DRY ICE PELLETS ARE PROPELLED BY A JET OF COMPRESSED AIR AND STRIKE THE SOIL TO BE REMOVED AT VELOCITIES UP TO THE SPEED OF SOUND. CLEANING RESULTS FROM THREE EFFECTS: 1. KINETIC EFFECT: DRY ICE PELLETS ARE ACCELERATED BY COMPRESSED AIR TO HIGH VELOCITIES THUS IMPACTING THE LAYER AND PROVOKING FRACTURES. 2. THERMAL EFFECT: THE LOW TEMPERATURE (-79ST. C/-110 F) MAKES THE COATING BRITTLE, CRACKS IT AND LOOSENS IT. THIS ALLOWS DRY ICE TO PERMEATE THE COATING. 3. SUBLIMATION: AFTER MAKING IMPACT, THE DRY ICE TURNS FROM SOLID INTO GASEOUS FORM ( SUBLIMES), EXPANDING ITS VOLUME BY A FACTOR OF 700. THE EXPANSION ACTS AS AN EXPLOSION THAT LIFTS THE COATING OFF THE SURFACE.
