DAILY SMOKERS WANTED
Researchers at the University of Auckland are seeking smokers to participate in a world-leading clinical trial of a new smoking cessation drug called Champix. Eligible participants must be 18 years or older, a daily-smoker who wishes to quit, have stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(copd), and not have used Champix in the last 12 months. Associate professor Natalie Walker said quitting smoking and staying smokefree was the only intervention that would halt the rapid decline in lung function seen with COPD. Champix is currently the most effective medicine in preventing relapse in recent ex-smokers available in New Zealand. To register interest in participating call 0800 367 644, email spacetrial@auckland.ac.nz, or contact via Facebook @Spacetrial.
ENROLLING MIGRANT COMMUNITIES
Migrant communities and the Electoral Commission are working together to spread the word about getting enrolled and ready to vote in the general election on September 23. The Commission will be connecting with communities throughout the Auckland Regional Migrant Services Trust and the Chinese New Settlers Services Trust. National manager of enrolment and community engagement Mandy Bohte said it was reaching out in various ways. Migrants tended to be less likely to to be enrolled and vote than other voters, she said. People can enroll or update their details by filling in an enrolment form. Forms are available at www.elections.org.nz, Postshops or by texting their name and address to 3676.
