Child stable after collision with car

- STAFF REPORTERS

A child being hit by a car near an Auckland childcare centre was an accident waiting to happen, a local says.

The young girl, believed to be four years old, was taken to Starship Children’s Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Taniwha St, Glen Innes, about 8am on Monday.

The collision occurred near Bumblebees Childcare Centre, which caters for children aged from three months to five years.

A statement from the centre said the incident occurred outside the centre while the girl was being dropped off at 8am.

A spokeswoman from the Auckland District Health Board said the girl’s condition had improved and she was stable.

Taniwha St resident Vernon Sutton said he did not see the collision, but heard the child screaming from the back of the ambulance.

About 70 children attend Bumblebees Childcare Centre, he said.

Resident Jane Jackson said the busy residential street was an accident waiting to happen as there were such high numbers of children being dropped off outside the childcare centre.

‘‘It’s so unspeakable,’’ Jackson said.

The road was re-opened about 9.50am and the serious crash unit continued to investigate.
