Sparks fly over fireworks debate

- STAFF REPORTER

I don’t think fireworks should be sold at all and instead organised displays for the public could be permitted if necessary. We now celebrate Halloween as well and all these ‘‘special occasions’’ are pretty expensive. It’s time to forget Guy Fawkes and sales to private individuals. BRYAN TOBECK Panmure Of course it shouldn’t be banned. Nothing is more fun than getting the kids together and creating your own fireworks display in the back yard. The vast majority of people are responsible so it would be a shame to remove fireworks from the general public because a few won’t follow the rules. MEG KATSIOURAS St Heliers

I understand that a few people love fireworks, whether it’s for Guy Fawkes or something else, but can I make a plea for people to use less noisy fireworks? It’s not just neighbours, pets and livestock I’m thinking of, but the many nesting birds at this time of year. I volunteered at a bird rescue centre and learned about the impact fireworks can have. Parent birds can become so frightened they fly away and never return to the nest, or baby birds may jump in fright from the nest and get caught by predators. Please opt for quieter fireworks and have them well away from trees or hedges where birds may be nesting. SUSAN ROCKLIFFE St Heliers I have never come across any rude window washers. They have always been kind even if I don’t have spare change, which is most of the time. VANIA WALLACE Mt Wellington

I’m not a fan of it and always wave them off. I have no idea what’s in their bottles and I don’t want the residue on my paint. Plus they are a major traffic hazard and distraction, darting and weaving through cars to get back to the curb while the cars are already trying to drive and make it through the light. There are other ways to make money. JACKIE BAGUE Stonefields

I don’t mind the ones that are courteous and polite, I will always give those ones a couple of dollars. I don’t mind giving a little to buskers as well. JOANNE MATTHEWS Mt Wellington
