Fireworks and caesarean sections

- STAFF REPORTER EMMA WILSON Point England

We went to Western Springs Speedway and there was supposed to be a big Guy Fawkes display on. But alas this never eventuated as the council cancelled it last week. So on Saturday night we had a little Guy Fawkes at home with sparklers and mini rockets. Last night the kids watched out the window at all of the fireworks going off around our area. I’m presuming fireworks will continue going off all week too. It’s really sad that Auckland had no public Guy Fawkes displays.we always look forward to Christmas in the Park for the spectacular show at the end of the night. DESIREE PRETTY Panmure For the second year in a row Remuera Golf Club had a commercial fireworks display in a residential area. It’s appalling when they are located right next door to the Waiatarua wetland where lots of the birds are currently nesting. They posted hints online on how to keep your pets calm, which weren’t nearly enough based on the size of the fireworks and noise they created.

I hope any future applications for display permits will be considered from an environmental point of view and turned down. GILLIAN ROSS St Johns

I don’t celebrate Guy Fawkes. The excitement of fireworks is tarnished by the increasing nuisance and harm they cause each year. Not only will they still be going off this week, they will be going off for the next few months, with absolutely no regard for other people or animals. I had two ‘planned’ c-sections because of medical conditions during pregnancy whereby if I delayed birth my children could have been still births. Because they weren’t ‘emergency’ they count in the statistics as a ‘planned c-section’ and ‘requested by the mother’.

The figures and reasons aren’t as clear cut as the titles imply. I believe every mother makes the best choices for her and her baby’s health. MEGAN DARROW Ellerslie

It’s the mother’s body and her decision. After two natural births I totally support all options. The physical and mental trauma of a natural birth isn’t something that’s easy to put up with either. It certainly isn’t always smooth sailing.

Yes, it is nature’s way but humans go against nature every minute of modern life. It’s the health and wellbeing of mother and child that matters, nothing else. DANIELA SPOETH Glen Innes
