EYES FORWARD

“Puffy under-eyes are the number-one dead giveaway of looking tired,” says Lochie Stonehouse, NZ’S director of artistry for YSL Beauty and Giorgio Armani. He sites the trend for hybrid makeup with skincare benefits as the best thing to happen to tired, time-poor people, i.e. us. His tip is to follow an eye cream or serum with YSL’S new Touche Éclat High Cover pen. The previous version was known for its skin-brightening effect, but along with increased concealing abilities, the new edition “contains caffeine and ruscus which combat puffiness, plus hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and soothing calendula”. “Apply to the inner corner of the under-eye area and blend with your ring finger,” he says.

It’s one of a number of new thin, yet high

coverage fluid concealers that maintain hydration, and stretch and move with expression. But if you constantly battle discolouration and dark circles, call in the big guns. “Corrector is your wake-up call for tired eyes,” says Blair Gamblin, education and makeup artistry manager for Bobbi Brown, of the cream or liquid products made to cancel out unwanted undertones. “Choose a pink or peach-based hue that will neutralise any under-eye discolouration and darkness.” Pat in gently with fingers just over the shadowy areas beneath eyes, before applying further concealer or foundation over the top.

ILLUMINATION STATIONS

Feeling constantly under the pump, or under the weather, can drain desirable luminosity from skin, resulting in unwelcome ashy or grey tones just under the surface. Add dewy radiance quickly by using an illuminating primer and foundation with radiant moisturising properties.

COLOUR UP

A quick pop of pink or peach on cheeks and lips will mimic healthy vigour. “Creambased colours always look fresh,” says Lara Srokowski, director of artistry for Lancôme Australia. “A lot of people get confused about which blush colour to wear with which lip colour. A good tip is to get a little bit of lipstick, mix it in a little illuminator on the back of your hand, and use it to pat into cheeks. It looks really glowy and it’s quick. Lancôme’s new Mademoiselle Shine lipsticks work really well on cheeks as well as lips because they’ve got a balmy, glossy gel texture.”

If you have the time or inclination, switching black eyeliner for navy on your lids, running a nude eyeliner along your waterline, squeezing lashes with a curler and adding a dab of a nude shimmering shadow on the inner corner of the eye are all tricks that make eyes look wider and brighter. Failing all of that? Have another shot of espresso.
