The Presidents Trophy took another step to qualify for the playoffs with a 71⁄2 - 21⁄2 win over a competitiv­e Manawatu team at Taihape.

In the Presidents Trophy John Gilbert had to settle for second going down 5/4. Denis Robertson also didn’t have a great round but played the crucial holes well and held on to win on the 17th . James Fannin continued his solid form leading from the start to win 6/4.

Peter Valentine lost 5 of the first 7 holes and despite fighting back couldn’t bridge the gap losing 2/1.

James Mickleson had a brilliant back nine to win 4/3. Danny Mickleson’s 2 birdies in the last 5 holes secured his win on the 17th . Gary Thomas and Kerry Wells were in sublime form and despite each giving 5 shots were impressive. Thomas coming in flat to the card to win 5/4. Wells however despite shooting 1 over the card 72 and birdies on 5,9,13 and 18 was all square with 3 holes remaining but won 2/1.

In the haggle, John Booth sailed around the course for a superb 43 points. Also on 43 was Kerry Wells. Alan Thomas managed 42 with 74 off the stick. Matt Thomas shot another subpar round of 70 aided by birdies on 2, 3, 9 and 18 for 40 points.

On 39 were Gary Thomas, Gary Cleaver, John McKinnon, 38 Richard Millner, Ken Cribb, Koke Cashell, 37 Danny Mickleson, JJ Walker, Ross Martin, Diane Mickleson, 36 Duane Dick, Nick McGuinn, Richie Nimmo and Kevin O’Brien.
