Council recognises Evento organiser

- SAM KILMISTER

‘‘I just do what I love to do and that’s it.’’

Without Amanda Street there would be no Evento and Feilding’s social services wouldn’t be the thriving success the town earnestly claims they are today.

Street is the driving force behind the wearable arts awards and the manager at Feilding’s Manchester House. She has been recognised with a community honours award by the Manawatu District Council.

Her 10-year involvement has seen her take Evento from a small gathering in the Feilding High School hall to a towering festival at Manfeild Stadium.

Councillor Phil Marsh said Street worked all year round in order to get the show off the ground.

‘‘Without Amanda it simply wouldn’t happen,’’ he said.

‘‘During the week of the show she takes leave from her job and works into the night finalising details and double checking rehearsals.

‘‘Her very hands-on approach has meant that she walks the talk. There would be very few people that would know the extraordinary lengths that Amanda goes to ensure Evento continues to be such a successful event year after year.’’

March said Street was humble, and passionate about supporting youth in the creative arts. Her efforts had brought great pleasure and reward to both students and audiences.

Street has been a teacher aide at Feilding Intermediate School and served on the school’s board of trustees.

Her work with Manchester House spoke volumes about her character, he said.

‘‘She is all about relationships and living out her values to make this a better community for those who grow up here.’’

Street said without her team she couldn’t have accomplished what she has.

‘‘Nothing I do I do by myself,’’ she said. ‘‘I always rope in my family, my wonderful husband. Evento is a team, Manchester House is a team, and we’re all a family.’’

Street’s nominator Kevin Darragh said she had an ability to put her hand up and do what needed to be done.

‘‘Amanda is very good at deflecting the good things she does onto others,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s been a pleasure to work on committees with her. The work she does for Manchester House is just amazing.’’
