FEILDING STORE STOCK SALE FRIDAY MARCH 17
The sheep yarding was the largest for quite some time and the day was fine, warm and clear which would have pleased those at the Field Days. Demand for sheep and most particularly lambs is growing almost exponentially and buyers are chasing the lambs that are coming forward for sale like no more will be made.
Medium 2 & 4th ewes sold up to $134 and, at last, breeding ewes are making more than cull works ewes again. The lamb entry crept up to be just over 17,000 and most were in reasonable order although plenty were a little plain, showing the result of what has not been an easy season for them, and weights may not be as high as hoped.
Don McLachlan, Pahiatua, had a good day selling 102 blackface cryptorchids for $115.50 and 101 blackface ewe lambs for $104.50 to top both sections. J& R Batley, Taihape, sold 91 blackface cryptorchids for $114 to run second.
Better Angus steers topped the steer sections with 4 rising three years from JJ Farms, Cheltenham, selling for $1830 ($2.92) and 6 rising two years from SG Schrider, Wanganui, selling for $1610 ($3.12).
Two pens of very heavy older Angus bulls from Ruaiti Valley Farm, Apiti, sold up to $1950 ($2.97) and 13 eighteen month Friesian bulls from the Glengyle Partnership, Hunterville, sold for $1440 ($2.91). Ruaiti Valley Farm, Apiti, again had a good result and sold a pen of 37 weaner Friesian bulls for $838 ($4.32), a price which would be acceptable when compared with feeder calf prices but some calf/weaner margins will be slim.
The heaviest heifers offered were a mixed pen of four from PG & LG Robertson, Halcombe, which sold for $1200 ($2.89) but most of the heifers were dairy cross and generally lighter as were the few weaner heifers offered.

Murray Grey steers 485 kg made $1280 ($2.64) and Belted Galloway steers 435 kg – 465 kg made up to $1280 ($2.54 - $2.80). Friesian steers 475 kg made $1315 ($2.77) and white face steers 360 kg – 570 kg made up to $1620 ($2.84 $3.01). 2 year Friesian bulls 412 kg made $1115 ($2.70) and Jersey bulls 420 kg made $1060 ($2.70).
