Home in flames

- PAUL MITCHELL

Firefighters fought fierce flames from a rural house fire for more than two hours until the blaze was brought under control.

The Fire Service was called to a rural property west of Palmerston North on Karere Rd, between Number 1 Line and Kairanga Bunnythorpe Rd, after a house caught alight just before 9.30pm on Monday.

Fire service spokesman David Meikle said the house was ‘‘well a light’’ by the time firefighters arrived and additional fire crews were called in to help.

It took four fire trucks from the Palmerston North and Milson brigades, plus back-up from the rural fire service, over two hours to battle the blaze.

The full extent of the damage was not clear from initial reports and the cause of the fire had yet to be discovered, Meikle said.

A fire service investigation unit was due to inspect the site on Tuesday morning.
