A group of Rangitikei students are showing their art to the world.

Rangitikei College and Whanganui High School have pulled together to create a joint exhibition on display at Graham Hall in Whanganui.

The exhibition is titled Te Whanau Puha - whaling.

The group consists of level two and level three students taking painting and printmaking courses.

Teacher Vanessa Edwards said the theme was whaling and the significance of the whale to New Zealand.

‘‘Students independently researched and responded to this concept and created a large resolved painting or woodcut that would be assessed and exhibited in a public gallery.’’

The exhibition opened on Friday night at the Community Arts Centre with students and their family there to celebrate the milestone.

‘‘The combination of the independent nature of the research, making and exhibiting with other students from another school in a public arena creates a unique and authentic space to practise their creative processes and see their work in a real world context,’’ Edwards said.

The students can gain four credits to go towards their NCEA qualification.

‘‘We are teaching to an unknown future and need to build confidence and resilience in our young people to put themselves out there to celebrate their successes.
