Sanson playground gets lift

- SAM KILMISTER

Sanson schoolchildren can play without fear as the town’s playground receives a much-needed safety upgrade.

The Manawatu District Council has approved up to $4000 to improve the recreation area and will consider increasing funding to maintain it.

The Sanson Community Committee spoke at length during the council’s Annual Plan process, requesting funding for the maintenance of the school playground until a new one can be built.

The community committee had historically agreed to maintain the site, however there was no agreement in place nor had any work occurred for more than five years.

Community and strategy general manager Brent Limmer said the playground was not compliant and required minor work.

He said the council was planning to install a new playground at the Sanson Hotel site. The development was still in the preliminary phase with the final thumbs-up to come from the developer.

Deputy mayor Michael Ford said several submissions by Sanson residents stated they felt their rates were only subsidising those in Feilding.

However, chief executive Richard Templer disagreed.

‘‘Given the work that’s been done by the council on the Sanson Domain, I don’t think we’ve been disadvantaging them in Sanson.’’
