NZ Male Choir in town

- SAM KILMISTER

The NZ Male Choir are bringing their show ‘Experience the Magic of the Male Voice’ to audiences in Palmerston North and Feilding.

The 50-member ensemble drops in over Labour Weekend, partnering up with camerata singers and Manawatu¯ soprano artist Shayna Tweed.

President Maurie Smith said it was unusual for the choir to hold its biggest performance of the year in Manawatu¯ , but it was persuaded by some of its singers from Levin and Wellington to give it a go.

‘‘We hope that the local music lovers will fill the venues for us,’’ Smith said.

The choir was formed more than 20 years ago to represent New Zealand in overseas choral competitions. It attracted members from Bluff to North Auckland, Smith said.

‘‘They come from all walks of life and share one common passion - singing.’’

It tours internationally - every five years a tour of the northern hemisphere and every two years throughout Asia and Australasia.

The choir has a broad repertoire, ranging from formal choral works, to popular, modern, show, folk, waiata, and gospel.

Musical Director Joe Christensen aimed to present an entertaining performance that varied with the audience and occasion.

‘‘This also challenges and extends the skills and talents of the members.’’

Rehearsals are in two sections, in the North and South Island respectively, and are held throughout the country to level out the travel and accommodation expenses for its members. The choir meets several times a year.
