New manager for Refuge

- FRANCES FERGUSON

A new manager has been appointed to the Taumarunui Women’s Refuge and Support Centre.

Tracy Milward was welcomed with a po¯ whiri last Friday as she replaced Kay Walshaw.

Milward has a background in social work and has worked in various organisations.

She has worked with children and families, including offenders at Waikeria Prison. She said the opportunity to put her skills to good use motivated her to apply.

‘‘It was an opportunity to work in the community but to provide that service to women and children in a really important sector and to make a difference and effect some changes, which I think will be really important.

‘‘Given the high domestic violence levels everywhere, it’s good to be part of the process of trying to change and educate people.’’

Milward moved to New Zealand from England 10 years ago where she worked as a child protection officer.

Now she lives in Owhango with her husband and son.

Covering the whole district from Ohura to the south of Taihape, strong networks were hugely important for Milward.

She intends to engage the community and develop her team further so the organisation can reach women and children in need.

Milward started her new role last month. Her first week was set to be in Wellington attending the national AGM which she said would be a good opportunity to network and learn about the organisation.

She said moving to the district was a good decision and people had been remarkably friendly.
