It is almost September and it won’t be long before spring is here and the warm weather begins.

It is about this time of the year that we begin to have reports of burglaries of insecure premises.

As the weather warms up and it becomes more comfortable overnight there is the temptation to leave windows and doors ajar over night while people sleep.

It is about this time of the year we begin to see a rise in burglary reported while occupants are home.

The crime picture shows a direct correlation of these kind of offences being committed and the warm weather.

With the warm weather more people are out and about overnight.

This includes people who are willing to enter homes and steal property while people are at home.

They are on the prowl for easy access to homes and light items that are easy to remove quietly and on-sell quickly - such as mobile phones, electronic items, car keys, wallets etc.

When interviewing suspects for burglary, they tell us that they look for the easiest option where they can get in and out as quickly and as quietly as they can.

Leaving doors and windows insecure is something they see as an easy target.

It is a terrible feeling knowing a burglar has been in your house, let alone being the victim of a burglary and knowing that they were there while you were asleep.

So as the weather warms take care to ensure your property is secure overnight.
