International debut for Groovit
‘‘We found the competition an incredible experience and myself and the kids didn't anticipate to get as far as we did, considering it was our first time attending an international competition.’’
Groovit Pukekohe has made a splash in international dance waters.
Earlier this month, Groovit’s KaMotion dance crew competed in the World Supremacy Battlegrounds competition in Sydney.
They finished 12th out of 17 teams on finals day.
Groovit senior choreographer, Georgie Crispe said the trip to Australia was the first time many of kids had travelled on a plane.
‘‘We found the competition an incredible experience and myself and the kids didn’t anticipate to get as far as we did, considering it was our first time attending an international competition.’’
Ka-Motion initially finished fifth in international preliminaries in the competition.
The high calibre of competition opened the dancers’ eyes, with crews from the Philippines being the most impressive, Crispe said.
‘‘We’re inspired to keep working on the crews’ dreams and dance even harder.’’
Crispe said the crew had to clear a few hurdles with one of the dancers having a lung infection and a few dancers getting bloody noses.
‘‘But being Kiwis as we are, they all danced their hardest and came 12th in the finals... which there was a lot of tears and smiles from myself and the parents.’’
Without the support of families, friends and the Franklin community, Groovit wouldn’t have been able to compete in Sydney, Crispe said.
‘‘I wanted to say a huge thank you to the community of Franklin for helping us fundraise and support the crew in getting to World Supremacy Battlegrounds.
‘‘We hope this is only the beginning of what’s to come, and we want to take all of the elite crews to the next level - so watch this space.’’
Groovit term four registrations are now open.
