Postnatal depression awareness
‘‘PND affects approximately 15 per cent of all women who give birth’’
It’s postnatal depression awareness week and Well Women Franklin is offering support and resources to women suffering from the disorder.
Postnatal depression (PND) affects approximately 15 per cent of all women who give birth and is common in all age groups, ethnicities, cultures and socioeconomic classes. PND is associated with a reduced likelihood of bonding between the mother and infant as well as impaired cognitive and emotional development of the infant. Symptoms can include depressed mood, irritability, loss of interest in normal activities, tiredness and fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, low libido, poor concentration and feelings of guilt about inability to look after the new infant.
Well Women Franklin is a charity providing free support services to women and their families who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing antenatal and/or postnatal distress and anxiety. They offer peer support groups, 24 hour telephone support, access to counselling and coaching, and do not require a diagnosis or referral.
Postnatal depression awareness week runs from October 29 to November 6. If you feel you may be suffering from the disorder, contact your midwife, GP, plunket nurse or other health professional. Well Women Franklin can also help - contact 021 1588 134.
