Seniors’ surprising stories sought

-

A Franklin life-story and photography project is seeking seniors with an unusual anecdote to tell.

The ‘You Might Be Surprised to Know’ project, which is being funded and supported by the Franklin Local Board and Franklin Community Arts, has been created to help break the stereotypes surrounding what it means to be an elderly.

Project manager Linda Grigg said: ‘‘Often when someone looks at an older per- son they make quick assumptions based on appearances. They don’t stop to think about the interesting and vibrant life that person has led, or still leads.

Grigg will interview participants about an interesting aspect of their life that a stranger, especially a younger person, may find unexpected.

The resulting short stories and images will then be published on social media and displayed in a special exhibition planned for June.

Waiuku Camera Club members, Dianne Smith, Julia Johnson and Robin Short, will photograph the participants.

People interested in participating in the voluntary project should be aged 65 years or older and currently living in the Auckland Council’s Franklin Local Board area.
