Driving more women to give golf a go

The ladies section of the Waiuku Golf Club would love more women to swing by and give golf a go.

In recent times, the number of woman playing at the club has dropped and there is now a drive to draw more woman to the sport.

During May, the club has held give a golf a go day sessions - where women were offered a free introduction to the game.

Waiuku Golf Club ladies captain, Lal Craig, said memberships could be tailored to suit a person’s schedule, whether they work full time or have a day off during weekdays.

‘‘We just wanna get some new members because we’re all getting older.

‘‘We’ll support people who are starting out there’s no problem.’’

Rosemarie Tomlinson said golf was a sport anybody could ease themselves into.

‘‘I was completely unfit when I started here, you don’t have to be young - we’ve got people here in their eighties playing golf.’’

Joining the club also gives people who have moved to Franklin an opportunity to make new friends.

The ladies section often travels to various golf competitions, has mystery trips and even attends horse races together.

‘‘I was new to Waiuku, I’ve only been with the club a year and it was a great chance to meet people and get to know the community,’’ Tomlinson said.

‘‘It’s the camaraderie of coming together and playing a great game - I love every minute of it.’’

The Waiuku Golf Club also helps to shed the pretentiousness image many people had of golf, Tomlinson said.

‘‘Some golf clubs people are quite sticklers to the rules and how things are done, it’s very formal, where as here you can relax and enjoy your time.’’

Craig also encouraged those outside the Franklin district to check out the beautiful views the golf course had across Waiuku’s estuaries. ’’People think Waiuku’s three days away and pack your lunch - and it’s not.’’
