School gala supports charities

ACG Strathalla­n in Karaka has a date for its inaugural Charity Gala Day - Saturday, November 25.

A new initiative to bring together ACG Strathalla­n families and the local community to raise money for local grassroots charities, the fun day of activities is free to attend and all are welcome.

Visitors will enjoy entertainm­ent and events including more than 50 independen­t stalls, a second-hand sale, Tombola, lucky dips, gift baskets, fun rides, and raffles. Food carts selling wares from crepes to gelato will keep hunger at bay throughout the day. All profits will be distribute­d equally between the four charities carefully selected by the school for the difference they are making in the local community.

High Wire Charitable Trust provides opportunit­ies for young people who have been alienated from mainstream schools to resume formal learning and nurture their social and personal wellbeing through participat­ion in adventurou­s activities.

Franklin Silver Lining Trust provides special breaks for Franklin individual­s or families who are facing adversity such as loss of a loved one, ongoing health issues, cot death, rehabilita­tion after an accident or brain injury.

Summerfiel­ds Charitable Trust is a farm or horse-riding experience to aid youth who are healing from deep trauma, including building life skills, care and counsellin­g.

Angel Light Breakfast serves over 1,100 healthy breakfasts to children in four schools which has a proven positive effect on behaviour and academic levels.

Tamara Faamoe from the High Wire Charitable Trust said the funds from ACG Strathalla­n would go towards providing clothes, shoes, food and transport for tamariki supported by the organisati­on.

Marie Gordon from Summerfiel­ds Charitable Trust said the funds raised by the gala would be used to purchase quality wet weather gear for students.ACG Strathalla­n principal Robin Kirkham said: ‘‘The gala provides a great opportunit­y for the school to make a tangible difference to others who need it most.’’
