McLaren Formula 1 on display

-

One of the most successful F1 cars in history will be displayed at Hampton Downs from OctoberNovember.

It is part of the celebration of 50 years since the Formula 1 World Championship win by Denny Hulme in 1967.

The McLaren M23 will be on display at the Bruce McLaren Heritage Centre, which is a museum inside Hampton Downs Motorsport Park.

The M23, which is powered by a Ford Cosworth engine, won the World Championship for McLaren in 1974 and again in 1976.

Hulme is New Zealand’s only Formula 1 world champion.

The Bruce McLaren Heritage Centre will also display a Formula 2 Brabham as well as a genuine pair of Denny’s race overalls and memorabilia associated with his racing career.

Hulme’s racing career started in New Zealand in an MG TF and he would go on to compete in 532 races with a 44 per cent podium success rate.

He started in 112 F1 Grand Prix and won eight.

He also raced in Formula Junior, F2, at Le Mans and Nurburgring, and in the legendary ‘‘Bruce and Denny Show’’ Can-Am series winning 22 races and the championship twice.

The Bruce McLaren Heritage Centre will open the display on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29.

The display will run for six weeks.
