Dance crews to nationals
Three Te Awamutu hip-hop crews will compete at the Street Dance New Zealand Hip Hop National Competition in April. Imperious Dance Company crews
Spoken, Rustic and Taken succeeded at the Waikato/Bay of Plenty regional qualifier on Saturday, March 4.
If the crews win at the nationals they take their dance moves to the international stage at the Hip Hop International World Championships in Los Angeles in August.
The dancers are all school-aged and have been practising before the school year started.
“Our dancers are very dedicated. We are so proud of every dance crew,” says Imperious Dance Company manager Tulona Vincent.
Imperious Dance Company is based in Te Awamutu and offers classes in Te Kuiti and Hamilton.
“The dance company has about 300 dancers taught by Te Awamutu daughter and mother duo Leeza and Tulona Vincent and three other staff members.
“The biggest thing we love to see is the growth of confidence in the students,” says Mrs Vincent.
Street Dance NZ launched was in 2007 in South Auckland to provide a platform for young people to grow through a shared dance experience.
An affiliation with Hip Hop International has paved the way for young people to achieve national and international success.
Hip Hop International was founded in 2002 and produces multiple live and televised street dance competitions.
