Deathnir aims to dominate

Heavy metal group Deathnir has a show in Hamilton.

Heavy metal enthusiasts will get to revel in a rock show that is hitting Hamilton first before continuing around New Zealand.

Touring to promote their new debut album, Deathnir will take to the stage at Biddy Mulligans for their September Onslaught Tour.

The gig will be a ‘‘mixed genre show’’ with supporting acts from aroundWaikato and Auckland, including Leave the Dead, 8 Steps to Madness, Leathur Tattoo and Slumbug.

Originally formed in 2013 as a band to compete in Battle of the Bands, the heavy metal group likens their sound more to Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, rather than the ‘‘screamo’’ style of rock.

The band is made up of four Hamilton members: Andrew Carter on guitar and vocals, Adam Johnson on bass, Luke Elliot on drums and Brad Ion on lead guitar.

Their debut nine-track album titled Death by the Axe, has a Norse mythology theme, Carter said, and their band name derives from this same ancestry.

The 47-minute album contains revolutionary songs as well as personal ones, said the vocalist, and they have been selling hard copies since early 2016.

Carter started playing the guitar at age 10 and is studying towards a music degree atWintec.

He believes heavy metal music has been revitalised over the last couple of years and has started ‘‘being healthy again’’.

He said the band has a long termgoal to play gigs in China, before going on to ‘‘dominate’’ the world stage.

Deathnir, with supporting acts, Friday September 2, Biddy Mulligans, 742 Victoria St, 8.30pm. Tickets: $10.
