BANDQUEST
I recently had the privilege of supporting a group of students who performed at Bandquest: the intermediate-age version of Smokefree Rockquest.
Eighteen rock bands from 13 Waikato schools competed for the title of Best Waikato Band. The bands performed a mix of original songs and covers.
I would like to congratulate all the young performers. Their confidence and skill levels were inspiring.
As the music teacher teacher at Berkley Middle School, my students were buzzing as they left the stage after performing in front of a packed Clarence Street Theatre.
Cambridge Middle School were deserved winners, performing two original songs to a very high standard.

NOT SO SWEET
In ’’Sweet appeal for Waikato SPCA’’, ( Hamilton Press, August 3) we read that, ‘‘two of the sweetest things in the world are cupcakes and baby animals’’. We are told that the SPCA’s cupcake day brings the two together.
But here’s the irony. All the cupcake recipes on the SPCA’s website contain ingredients derived by cruelty to baby animals. I’m referring to eggs and dairy. Eggs are derived by cruelty to chicks.
Cows milk is derived by cruelty to calves. Of course, the hens and mother cows suffer too.
Given that cruelty-free vegan recipes abound, isn’t it odd that an organisation that claims to be for ‘‘all creatures great and small’’ is encouraging supporters to bake with [such] ingredients?
