A cappella style in pop spotlight

- COMPETITION

Two-time Grammy winning a capella group Pentatonix sold out their Auckland Town Hall show in a heartbeat and the unrelenting demand for tickets has seen the show moved to Vector Arena. Pentatonix consists of: Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grassi.

The singing sensations have become world renowned for selling out shows around the globe and leaving fans begging for more.

To give you a taste of what you’re in for at the show we have a copy of their self-titled album Pentatonix up for grabs.

Containing such great songs as Cheerleader, Can’t Sleep Love, Where Are U Now, Sing and If I Ever Fall In Love (ft Jason Derulo) among its 17 tracks, it’s a real stunner.

Their ability to trade lead vocal parts from song to song means that the group can move between genres without sacrificing strength, leaning on the talents of one member for a gospel-tinged song, and another for something EDM works well in their favour. Pentatonix have not forgot- ten their roots, and tracks such as Cracked and the stately Take Me Home are pristine in their deft a cappella arrangements.

Ultimately, by moving away from cover tunes, Pentatonix have helped push the a cappella style even further into the pop spotlight. That the only instruments they have used to do it are their voices makes their achievement all the more impressive. Since bursting onto the scene in 2011, Pentatonix have taken instrument-free music to a whole new level, igniting a massive global following in the process.

Their YouTube channel numbers alone are stunning, having amassed more than 1.57 billion views and 10.7 million subscribers. Speaking of covers however, they sing a mean version of Lorde’s Royals which has already garnered over 70 million views on YouTube.

Will they bust it out at the show – there’s only one way to find out. Tickets from Ticketmaster. Competition by Fill The House Tickets project – proudly supporting families of children with cancer.

To be in to win, email your name, address and daytime telephone number, to hpfthcomps@gmail.com, with Pentatonix in the Subject, by midday, Wednesday, September 7.
