Rowing club ready for big Twizel challenge

- KELLEY TANTAU

Waikato Rowing Club will be heading down to this year’s New Zealand Club Nationals with a winning mentality.

Team member Elliot Rhodes, who is the stroke seat of the men’s senior pair and men’s senior four, said there will be ‘‘stiff competition’’ at the nationals, held in Twizel from February 14-18.

They’ll be keeping their eyes on Cure Boating Club, based in Canterbury, and the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club. But Rhodes said it was all a friendly rivalry.

Over Auckland Anniversary weekend, Waikato Rowing Club made good lengths in the North Island Championships on Lake Karapiro.

The team received five golds, two silvers and five bronze medals.

Rhodes was a part of the winning senior mens pair and senior mens four. Saturday was his first race with team member Richard Power.

They hope to win gold in these two events down in Twizel.

‘‘We want the club to do really well, have fun and enjoy being down there. Everyone has their own personal goals,’’ Rhodes said.

But he said the club wanted to do more than come away with bronze or silver medals.

It will be the last competition

‘‘We want the club to do really well, have fun and enjoy being down there. Everyone has their own personal goals.’’
