YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

Hamilton City Council’s hearings committee recently held its twoday hearing into public submissions on its proposal to change the way it collects rubbish. At the heart of it all, is a plan to reduce waste and recycle more. More people are in favour of turning in their rubbish bags in exchange for using wheeled rubbish bins which will target certain types of waste. There will also be more avenues to recycle different types of plastic, for example. Those who presented at the two-day public hearing were cautious, however, about giving over their full support for the plan. Some are worried about the security of wheeled rubbish bins and there was a suggestion they’d be a target for vandals. Others are worried about how disabled people could haul out and collect their wheeled bin, and the council has planned for this. The hearings committee will now go away and consider what they have read and heard from the public, so it can make a recommendation to the council over the next few months.

Lawrence Gullery The Air Force Band will be performing tonight, Wednesday, February 22, at 7pm at the Clarence Street Theatre. Conducted by Simon Brew (pictured).
