Hamilton schools scoop three gold heart awards

- STAFF REPORTERS

Three Hamilton Early Learning Services have received gold from the Heart Foundation for creating heart-healthy environments.

Montessori Flagstaff, ABC Rototuna and TopKids Somerset all recently achieved gold-level Pa-Harakeke awards, as part of the Heart Foundation’s free Healthy Heart Award programme. Partially funded by the Ministry of Health, the programme supports early learning services to promote healthy eating and physical activity to under-fives, their families and the community. Waikato Heart Foundation nutrition adviser Kathleen Paris said the awards were a great achievement for the BestStart centres and for Hamilton. ‘‘It is fantastic that so many centres are committed to creating healthy learning environments for their children,’’ she said. ‘‘Many children spend all day at an early learning service so it is important that the food being provided meets the children’s nutritional needs.’’
