The Hamilton City Council and Momentum Waikato have announced the historic Hamilton Hotel building, on the corner of Victoria Street and Sapper MooreJones Place, as the site for a new city theatre. It will replace Founders Theatre which closed last year. It’s certainly a decision which has generated a large volume of debate of our Facebook and Neighbourly platforms (see page 10). In fact, so popular was the topic with commentators that Momentum Waikato jumped on our Facebook page and tried to redirect feedback to their own platform. Good try, but I don’t think so. People will want to speak and discuss the decision in public, not in a controlled environment. There’s been criticism and praise for the decision and those in charge will no doubt by wading through the feedback to help take the next step forward. Parking seems to be a sticking point with many while others are worried about latenight crime spoiling the positives the theatre could bring to the city. We look forward to your feedback.
