Good sports build fitness trail

- KELLEY TANTAU

Sport Waikato is trading ‘‘sweat equity’’ for its latest community project.

Good Sorts for Sport was initiated so the organisation could give back to the community.

Last week, around 75 team members tackled three projects: Maeroa Intermediate School in Hamilton, Morrinsville Croquet Club and the Waikato River Trails in South Waikato.

The team at Maeroa helped build a fitness trail around the school’s field.

Deputy principal Amanda Taylor said the school needed manpower to put the plan into place.

She hopes the trail will be completed by the end of the year and said the pupils that have been involved with the process are especially excited.

The fitness trail has been built with support of Mind Lab and the Dinsdale Lions Club.

Sport Waikato chief executive Matthew Cooper said the day was about rolling up your sleeves and picking up a wheelbarrow. He said the trail encourages what their organisation was all about.

‘‘It encourages activity. You can’t carry your iPhone around while doing this.’’

More than 15 applications were received for the Good Sorts for Sport project, and Cooper would like to challenge other organisations to take on some of the remaining applications.
